German Team Championships – second weekend
16.11.2009 – The German Schachbundesliga – team chess championship – is the strongest in the world, with 273 players from 34 countries in 16 teams. The top female player is IM Anna Musychuk of Slovenia. The 2009/10 season went into its second weekend with rounds three and four. Werder Bremen, had to play without their top Azeri players owing to visa problems. Pictures, results and games.

Adrian Mikhalchishin : Power of Exchange
The correct technique of exchanging is the most important ability of Grandmasters! Which pieces to swap and which pieces to keep, whether to recapture with a piece or with a pawn, these are questions which every player of every level has to answer many times during a single game. And the greatest difference between GMs and amateurs is not in opening knowledge or in calculation power, but in this simple technique. The great Botvinnik even said that chess is just multiple exchanges. He explained Fischer’s technique of play: He had never bad pieces - he always exchanged them for his opponent’s strong pieces. German Team Championships – second weekend

Report by Holger Lieske

This weekend was the second in the 2009-2010 season of the German Team Championship. It started on Friday with the "Hanseatic derby" of Werder Bremen vs Hamburger SK, which is really the seventh round but was played in advance. The venue was the famous Weser Stadion, where normally the Champions League and European League football matches take place.

Werder played without their top Azeri players Shak Mameryarov and Vugar Gashimov, because the two could not come to German due to visa problems. After dramatic developments the match ended in a tie 4.0-4.0. The game of Radoslav Wojtaszek vs Pavel Eljanov was the last and decisive game and is well worth replaying, especially the ending with passed and connect pawns on different wings.

Pavel Eljanov in the Bundesliga

Werder Bremen with their top eight players (Gashimov, Mamedyarov, McShane, Eljanov, Efimenko, Fressinet, Areshchenko, Roiz) is without doubt a hot candidate for the title. The reigning champion Baden-Baden has in the current season once again the nominally strongest team, with top players including Anand, Carlsen, Svidler, Shirov, Bacrot, Movsesian, Adams, Naiditsch, Vallejo Pons, and Nielsen.

The venue of the Baden-Baden match was not a football arena but the local "Kulturhaus LA8", which is quite luxurious for such events (picture above). Baden won this match against Bayern Munich – yes, the same as great football club, but with much less money involved. The score was 5.5 to 2.5 but Alexei Shirov played a disastrous miniature against Michael Bezold.

Alexei Shirov – this can happen even to the strongest players in the world

Bayern München is, like Tegel (Berlin), SF Berlin, Erfurt and Heidelberg, one of the teams with mainly German players living in the vicinity. On the starting lists based on the average ratings you will find them usually at the bottom.

IM Anna Muzychuk of Slovenia played her first games as one of the few female players – and the strongest one at that – in the highest German chess league. She is playing on board eight for SC Eppingen. In round three Anna, who is rated 2533, scored a fine black-piece win against IM Marcos Llaneza Vega, 2504. But in round four IM Oliver Reeh, 2442, taught her a lesson in kingside attacks after Bg5 h6 Bh4 g5 in the Ruy Lopez (or Giuoco Piano). Oliver is on the ChessBase team and provides us with many of the didactic positions you see on our news page.
